ABOUT
Born in 1981 in Nantes, Iannis Pledel lives and works between Paris and Saint-Malo.
He upends the visible.
A shop window that doubles the street, a face caught between two expressions, a body emerging from black without ever quite pulling free of it: his painting explores the ambiguities of these moments of reversal, where perception offers a glimpse of several realities coexisting within a single image.
His work is built in counterpoint: interior and exterior, day and night, light and shadow. From this tension a more intense presence is born, as if the visible let its reverse surface.
This inquiry unfolds across two complementary bodies of work, as different in facture as in light.
The Day Paintings interrogate the multiplicity of space through the city, Paris above all. Reflections, transparencies, and backlighting shift the markers between inside and outside. These are places where several worlds permanently overlap. Eras cross paths, glances answer one another, and behind the apparent stillness of façades, a world remains in motion. Light transforms familiar places into strange spaces where the ordinary gives way to unexpected grace.
The Night Paintings shift this same inquiry toward human beings and their relationships. Flesh and everyday scenes interrogate the ambivalence of human passions and the moments of reversal that run through them, in a chiaroscuro inherited from old master painting. The body emerges here through a single gesture: a broad stroke of black sweeps across the canvas, the body seeming at once to emerge from it and to be engulfed by it. Faces hold several emotions at once: desire, tenderness, violence, or vulnerability remain suspended within a single instant. The body never fully gives itself away, it betrays contradictory forces, luminous or darker, that have always run through human beings. Societies transform, technologies advance, human nature itself does not change.
The portraits extend this same inquiry in its most concentrated form: a gaze or a posture is enough to carry the whole of its tension. Those tied to the Day Paintings remain inseparable from their setting, while those tied to the Night Paintings narrow the inquiry to the intensity of a gaze and an intimate presence.
From his earliest photographic work, Iannis Pledel already composes a layered space where the gaze itself can tip: tilted horizons, off-center framing, superimpositions, transparencies, and suspended moments. This inquiry runs through The Escape from Venice (2013), Château Shadow (2016), and Odyssey (2018), then Fragments of Desires (2018), where photography and painting meet for the first time. It goes on to find, in Floating Souls (2021), a fully painterly expression.
Painting deepens this inquiry: it allows him to build the image from his own inner movement, making visible presences and tensions that could not otherwise appear. Reversal then becomes the very principle of painting. That is where it finds its necessity.
